My Friend Maya Loves to Dance was written by Cheryl Willis Hudson and illustrated by Eric Velasquez.

Sub-genre: Fiction
Theme: Types of Dance
Primary and Secondary Characters: Maya is the main character. The secondary character is Maya's friend who is narrating the story but she doesn't appear until the end of the story.

Publisher and Date of Publication: Abrams Books for Young Readers; 2010
Summary and Uses: Maya loves dancing. She loves the different types of dance, dressing up in different dancing attire, and she loves the thrill of performing. The book is written in poetic verse so each page flows together well. At the end of the story, we finally meet the narrator who is in a wheelchair which is why she loves watching Maya dance. This story appeals mainly to girls and especially young dancers. This book would be great to read in a small group and be discussed in a book talk format.
