What if? was written and illustrated by Laura Vaccaro Seeger.
Genre: Picture Book
Sub-genre: Fiction
Theme: Sharing
Primary and Secondary Characters: Three unnamed seals are the primary characters. However, the boy on the front cover plays an important role in the story. He is the secondary character that begins the entire story.
Awards:None
Publisher and Date of Publication: Roaring Brook Press; 2010
Summary and Uses: This picture book tells the story with few words and many pictures. The boy kicks a ball into the ocean and two seals find it and begin playing with it by batting it back and forth. But then one seal missed the ball and it goes to shore. As the seal goes to get it, another seal comes along and wants to play. But then what about the seal who is still waiting for the others return? There are three separate scenarios (this one included) and it makes the reader realize how important sharing is. I would use this in a lower level class like kindergarten or 1st grade. They would love the painted pictures and how interactive the story can be.
